Mrs. Lund talks about the activities and how they are connected to the real world. How learning these skills can help kids discover their passion and how this can help them become more motivated in learning more about science, technology and math in the classroom.

A Night of Fun!On September 20, 2016 the BLHS BIT along with their lil BIT's hosted their third annual participate for the second graders of Basehor-Linwood's vast school district.
Parents of the children were asked to come along with their kids to see just how much fun this experience was. During the evening our students and parents were engaged in working with high school and middle school mentors. One of our parents attending that night was a structural engineer and able to give our students and parents hints on building roller coasters to help them understand how to build the rollercoaster to be successful. It was great to have a parent who was able to talk about their career and what they do to bring the activity to the real world application. Students also used foil and pennies to build a boat that would float and count how many pennies. Many parents were helpful in guiding our students with their knowledge from their workforce experience. One of our boats held over 300 pennies before sinking. It was exciting for all students and parents to cheer each other on. Students learned how to code with Dot and Dash and parents actually learned how to code as well. One of students Alex Bailey, who is taking coding courses at the high school, was our mentor for the middle school and high school students to help them understand how block coding is a start to learn how to code. It was another successful night with adult mentors and high school and middle school mentors making connections between our STEM activities and the real world in where these will be used. Jobs they can hold in the future and how learning these great collaboration and team skills will help them be successful in the future. |
